  Program History
The AWARE Program was developed by a panel of dairy experts, including Dennis Armstrong, University of Arizona (retired); Mike Gamroth, Oregon State University; Jim Reynolds, University of California, VMTRC, Tulare; and John Smith, Kansas State University. The tool was further evaluated on commercial dairy operations for effectiveness.

The AWARE Program begins with gathering farm information (pre-assessment), assessing the operation, and a follow-up report to the producer regarding assessment findings. Aggregate data is handled in a database, similar to OFAER, allowing the industry feedback to evaluate its current status and progress in animal welfare issues.

Program Goals
• Promote good animal welfare practices
• Improve public perception of animal care in the livestock industry
• Encourage industry-led self-awareness

Description of an AWARE Assessment
The assessment flow is planned from the background information provided
by the producer. The assessor records animal observations and interviews management & employees for additional information. The assessment is conducted in 4 steps:

-  Entrance interview. Assessor reviews background information, discusses
the program objectives and listens to comments and expectations of the
   producer.

-  Assessment. Assessor walks through the entire operation and records
observations of animals in the daily management of the operation; may
interview management and employees for information regarding animal
   care and handling.

-  Exit interview. Assessor reviews finding of the observations with producer;
discusses both Strengths and Challenges seen during the assessment.
With each Challenge, the assessor will also discuss Recommendations to
   address the respective issue.

-  Report of data. Assessor files the complete findings with EMS, LLC. The
report will be reviewed for thoroughness and clarity and sent to the
   producer.

Production practices assessed during the visits are grouped into ten areas: General Animal Management, Feed & Water Access and Quality, Herd
Health, Facilities, Housing, Parlor Behavior, Special Needs Management, Handling & Transportation, Replacement Cattle, and Management. All
animals on the farm will be observed. Detailed animal observations include:

-  Body condition score
-  Locomotion score
-  Tail docking
-  Animal footing/movement
-  Animal hygiene
-  Swollen hocks/knees
-  Stocking rates
-  Animal behavior during milking

Certification Option
The certification option  allows producers to choose their level of participation.  If desired, an audit program is available to allow a producer to gain "Certified" Status.
